JAMB Partners with The New Sierra Leone Centralized Admissions System

The future of African education is digital, and Sierra Leone just took a massive leap forward. In a landmark collaboration, Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Technical and Higher Education has joined forces with Nigeria’s Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to overhaul how students get into university.

Say goodbye to fragmented, slow, paper-heavy admissions. Say hello to a streamlined, transparent, and legally-backed Centralized Admissions System (CAS).

How Sierra Leone is Revolutionizing University Admissions (with a Little Help from Nigeria)

Applying to university can be an absolute headache. Between juggling different application forms, tracking down exam results, and waiting on edge for admission letters, the traditional process is exhausting for both students and institutions. But Sierra Leone is about to change the game.

The country is on a mission to build a brand-new, tech-driven Centralized Admissions System (CAS) for all its tertiary institutions.

And to make sure it’s done right, they’ve teamed up with a powerhouse that knows a thing or two about processing millions of applications: Nigeria’s Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

 The Nigeria-Sierra Leone Connection

This is a major educational upgrade and what it means for the future. This partnership didn’t just happen overnight. It all started when a high-level delegation from Sierra Leone, led by Deputy Minister Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara, flew to Nigeria to watch JAMB work its magic firsthand during its Annual Policy Meeting.

Impressed by how Nigeria handles its massive centralized admissions model, they wanted in on the blueprint. Nigeria’s Minister of Education officially greenlit a tech mission, sending JAMB experts over to Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, to share practical strategies and implementation secrets.

Sierra Leone isn’t looking to clone Nigeria’s system copy-paste style. Instead, they are adapting global best practices to fit their own unique educational landscape.

Cabinet Approved & Ready to Roll

This isn’t just a “good idea on paper,” it has serious political backing. Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Technical and Higher Education, confirmed that the Centralized Admissions System has already secured Cabinet approval and is legally backed by the Universities Act of 2021.

Currently, Sierra Leone uses a decentralized system in which every university does its own thing.

The new reform will change everything by creating a unified digital platform that connects:

  • Traditional Universities
  • Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions

To ensure a smooth rollout, the ministry is bringing together a “Dream Team” of tech partners and national agencies, including WAEC, the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA), and telecom regulators.

JAMB partnership with Sierra Leone on the digital admissions framework

Transparency, Data Integrity, and No More Duplication

So, what does this actually look like in practice? During a recent major stakeholder meeting, JAMB presented a comprehensive framework for Sierra Leone’s new national digital architecture.

Once fully deployed, the new system is designed to tackle three major pain points:

  • Transparency: No more behind-the-scenes guesswork. Students will have a clear, fair track to admission.
  • Zero Duplication: Eliminating the issue of students taking up multiple slots across different universities, which leaves other qualified candidates stranded.
  • Better Data Integrity: Giving policymakers accurate statistics to improve national educational planning.

With Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the drive of Sierra Leone’s leadership, this tech-forward reform is set to restructure how higher education works in the country.
